A study on factors of preoperative anxiety of operative patients

Abstract
The puropse of this study was to determine the degree and the factor of preoperative anxiety.
The subject for this study were 40 adult surgical patients at C university hospital in Kwang Ju city.
The data were collected from JAN 20th to Feb. 20th, 1993.
The Instruments used in this study was the preoperative anxiety scale by park young kyu.
Date were analyzed by using percentage, ANOVA and Factor analysis of S.P.S.S. program.

The results of this study are summerized as follows ;
1. The degree of preoperative anxiety average 81.5, higher than the average 72.5 of this instruments.
2. The degree of preoperative anxiety related to general characteristics was in significant economic status. (F=6.071, P<.01)
3. Preoperative anxiety was classified into 7 factors ;
Factor 1(3 items) : Anxiety from environmental change with hospital(33.9%)
Factor 2(2 items) : Anxiety from trust in medical personnel(11.5%)
Factor 3(3 items) : Anxiety from social isolation(9.7%)
Factor 4(2 items) : Anxiety from surgical outcoms(7.1%)
Factor 5(2 items) : Anxiety from the Lack of information(6.1%)
Factor 6(1 items) : Physical anxiety(5.7%)
Factor 7(1 items) : Anxiety from nursing care and treatment situation(4.9%)
7 factors consist of 14 items extracted and their cummulative percentage were 78.8%.
4. Anxiety from surgical outcomes(factor 4) with an average of 3.275 degree was the highest.
As a result of this study, the development of anxiety scale instrument for operative patient is strongly needed.
